Karin Fortwangler, from Audubon, Pennsylvania, told Metro she experienced the signs of pregnancy – including missed periods and fatigue – but attributed it to the stress of being a busy mom. And although she suffers from morning sɪᴄᴋɴᴇss, Karin thinks it’s an abdominal bug that her children – Charlotte, 4, Roger, 2, and Caroline, one – have also experienced. But on March 15, the mother-of-three woke up with the same excruciating back ᴘᴀɪɴ she experienced in ʟᴀʙᴏʀ with her three children.
She recalls: “In ʟᴀʙᴏʀ was a rather different feeling so I was pretty sure it had to be that or some kind of weird kidney stone.” My husband is getting up to get ready for work (around 5:15 am), so I said to him: ‘You’ll think I’m crazy because I think I’m crazy, but I think I might be going into labor.’ Karin’s husband Adam then called the agency to say that he was taking his wife to the hospital. When they arrived, Karin was taken for an ultrasound and doctors confirmed she was pregnant – but she went into ʟᴀʙᴏʀ a few weeks early.
The mother recounted: “They said they would do a few more tests and then see what they could do to stop ʟᴀʙᴏʀ because ideally they wanted the baby to be 36-37 weeks old before birth. “But considering her longest labor was just 5 hours, Karin could feel that nothing could have stopped this unexpected baby from being born that morning. Twenty minutes after being informed. When she was informed that she was giving birth to another baby, Karin started to feel the urge to give birth and the doctor discovered that she was 7cm dilated.
Just before 8 a.m., Karin welcomed baby Katherine into the world – just three hours after she woke up in agony. Fortunately, doctors found Katherine – weighing 5lb 13oz – to be a perfectly healthy baby and spent two days in hospital as usual. Needless to say, being a mother for the fourth time has been a lot for Karin – and she admits she cried after learning she was pregnant because her three eldest children were only sleeping through the night. “I am a person who thrives on schedules and routines,” she added.
I’m also really looking forward to the end of diapers, which finally feels like it’s within my reach, even with my daughter turning a year old in January about a year away. But how did Karin go almost 9 months without realizing she was pregnant? As she is still breastfeeding her youngest daughter, Karin won’t get her period anyway and she has put her fatigue aside to take care of three kids full time. Since she just had a baby in the past year, Karin also fits most of her maternity clothes.
She only noticed her clothes getting a little tighter right before Katherine arrived. But what makes Katherine’s surprise appearance all the more difficult is the fact that she was born during the coronavirus crisis – meaning Karin and Adam had to turn to friends to help find diapers, wipes, and wipes and other essentials. Karin added: “We’re going to go a little bit crazy, but it’s amazing how easy it is to settle into a routine once we’ve all gotten over the sʜᴏᴄᴋ of a new baby and basically the whole life. Our lives are canceled!”
