Visitors to a shopping mall in South Carolina were beyond alarmed when they saw a dog tied to a dumpster in the parking lot, next to a sign that claimed his name was Scooter and that his owner had gone to jail, and he was free for the taking.
A couple who noticed him freed him and temporarily took him in for the day after posting photos of the pup online to see if anyone would recognize him.
No one did, but the picture did find its way to Paula Langford, the founder of South Eastern Homeless Animals (SEHA). She offered to take Scooter and see if she could have him scanned for a microchip to verify the story.
It didn’t take long for Langford to realize that Scooter had been well cared for. He was clean, didn’t have fleas, had an expensive collar and carrying case, and was accompanied by a bag of healthy food.
He was nervous but loving and was happy to cuddle with Langford while she drove him home to scan his chip.
The microchip revealed that the pup had run away a couple of times and had been returned each time, and the number on the chip didn’t work. As it turned out, the sign next to Scooter had been telling the truth.
Scooter’s owner had been arrested, and he had given his dog and belongings to friends in order to keep the pup out of a shelter.
But those friends abandoned him. A warrant is now out for the arrest of the traitors.
Thankfully, Langford was able to get in touch with the mother of Scooter’s owner, who happily agreed to take the pup.
It was a 24 hour journey to the meet-up point, but it was worth it – Scooter was so happy to see family again!
How lucky that this pup has a family to care for him! This story couldn’t have had a happier ending.
