When pet owners don’t take proper care of their animals, it’s not just cruel, it’s harmful to all of us. Neglect places a burden on the rest of society to hold those people accountable for their actions, and to correct the extreme error of their ways.
In the case of Argentinian police officer Maximiliano Sergio Mellado, the negligence he had been accused of was so egregious that the story is shocking to hear. According to eyewitnesses, when this officer came across a harmless dog who had recently given birth, he did something unthinkable.

The town of Neuquén, Argentina was outraged recently over the actions of police officer Maximiliano Sergio Mellado. According to eyewitnesses, Officer Mellado shot a dog named Milagros and one of her puppies to whom she’d given birth three days before. There was no apparent reason for his actions. The puppy died at the scene, but Milagros was rushed to a veterinary hospital…
There, a vet named Frederico Lopez and his team operated on her for six hours, attempting to reconstruct her jaw. He wasn’t able save her left eye, and sadly three days later Milagros passed away.
Officer Mellado was suspended and charged with animal cruelty, but he skipped out on his first two hearings. A warrant was issued for his arrest, but his whereabouts are unknown at this time. Hopefully soon, though, there will be justice for Milagros and her puppy.
