In the wild, there is no doctor around to deliver newborn creatures. Animals must fend for themselves and suffer through pregnancy complications, should they arise. Once the little ones are born, parents rely on their survival instincts to defend them.
Even in captivity, wild animals must be given their space when in such a precarious situation. Keepers and vets only intervene during a birth if it is absolutely necessary.
It must have been very hard for the caretakers of a panda mom to watch her suffer through her three-day labor.
A labor so long was indicative of very bad news: They feared the baby died in the womb, which would explain why the mother couldn’t give birth.
The entire time, they watched, hoping for the best despite expecting the worst. Then, one day, the mother suddenly rolled over onto her back and hoisted her legs into the air.
All the action was caught on camera, and the keepers could barely believe their eyes: They noticed the tiny, hairless, pink head of a tiny newborn panda.
They were relieved to hear the sweet sound of the baby squealing as she took her first breaths. Surely, the mother panda was just as relieved not to be in any more pain!
